Herbie Hastie is a valued member of the residential dispatch team at Able Moving & Storage. His main priorities are scheduling crews, trucks, training, and maintenance for our residential moving services division, including local and long distance moving. He interacts with each crew member daily to ensure they are well-prepared for their tasks, understand each job’s scope, come dressed in uniform, and arrive on time for each move.
We sat down with Herbie and chatted with him about the moving industry and his experiences:
- How long have you been with Able, and what were you doing before you joined the company?
This month will be my 9-year anniversary. I previously worked with the Discovery Channel, cataloging incoming video and audio tapes and pulling requested show titles for the editing department. I heard about Able through a friend who worked here during the summer, and they referred me for the position.
- What do you like about working in the moving industry?
I like that it’s sustainable through most economic trends because people will always have a need for moving. It’s also an area that can withstand AI and computer automation because we will always need humans to do this work.
- What do you like about working at Able?
I like that we are independently owned because it creates a tight-knit environment compared to working for a large van line or company. We get to be much more hands-on with the crews and owners. Our owners and leadership team take care of employees and go out of their way to make everyone feel welcome with parties, picnics, events, and more.
- Do you have any personal hobbies/activities?
I enjoy hanging out with my daughter and friends, walking, pools, and hiking at Conway Park and Preserve in Haymarket.
- What is the best career advice you can offer or that you live by?
My best advice is to simply keep pushing forward. Life is never easy, but you must keep moving.
