Prepare your kids for the move

When preparing a move with children, a lot of pre-planning is needed! Firstly, their ages must be taken into consideration. If you have older children, you can assign them tasks that they can then check off of a responsibility chart. Make this fun by adding the potential of working towards a big reward, such as a new game, shopping trip, or time out with friends. Tasks that older children in the teens can handle include:

  • Packing delicate items for the move
  • Labeling boxes
  • Folding clothing
  • Making a checklist
  • Helping younger siblings
  • Caring for pets

For younger children, keeping them occupied and happy while you are coordinating a move, may be a challenge. Try having them play with a large empty moving box and allowing them to decorate it with stickers and markers. If they are responsible enough to handle a few tasks, have them put stickers next to each item on a list when it is completed. Fun activities for younger kids that will also be helpful during a move include:

  • Sorting toys
  • Stacking books
  • Retrieving light items for an older sibling or adult to pack away

It is always a good idea to have some toys on standby for children when they become tired of helping. Some good toys to keep children busy include:

  • Card games (like memory or flash cards)
  • Puzzles
  • Coloring books
  • Paint with water books
  • Playdoh
  • Musical toys

When you are prepared to entertain your kids during the moving process, everything will go much more smoothly! If you have very young children, make sure there is someone there to supervise them at all times. It may be best to set up a gated play area or playpen for young ones to play in so that they stay out of the way of heavy furniture and working movers. Consider hiring a sitter to keep an extra eye out during this hectic time so that you don’t feel too overwhelmed while trying to manage the move.
