The process of moving into a new home has the potential to be a gratifying experience as you are ending one chapter of your life and starting fresh with another. While various unexpected issues may pop up over the course of your moving into your new home, they can be mitigated with the helpful assistance of professional local movers.

Able Moving & Storage continues to be the most trusted residential and commercial moving company in the Washington D.C., Maryland, and Northern Virginia areas. When you allow us to manage all aspects of your move, our team prioritizes you and has your relocation needs at the forefront of their minds. With over 33 years of experience in local moves, we understand that we are not only packing and unpacking furniture and other items, but we are moving precious memories and items with sentimental value to your future home.

Upon moving into your new home, there are a few steps that you may need to consider taking before officially considering yourself settled in:

1. Check Delivered Boxes

Prior to moving your belongings from your last place of residence, make a list of all your belongings. Then, after you have moved into your new place, compare this list to what you find in the unpacking process. This will help you keep track of everything and ensure that all your belongings have been safely transported to your new home.

2. Get Your Utilities Running

It almost goes without saying that you should coordinate with your power and water providers during your move, shutting off your utilities in your old place, and activating everything in your new home. Since you wouldn’t want to move into your new home and not be able to turn your lights on, the sooner you work together with your utilities provider, the smoother your move-in process will be.

3. Locate Fuse Box and Main Water Valve

Your fuse box and main water valve are essential aspects of your home that require your attention, especially in cases of emergencies or sudden issues with your water or electricity. Check to see if your circuit breaker box is labeled correctly by testing each breaker and inspecting which room it corresponds with. Look into the functional condition of your main water valve by shutting it off and finding where the water runs into your house.

If it doesn’t appear to be working properly, schedule a replacement immediately.

4. Switch Out Locks

This step makes a significant difference as it involves securing your new home against unauthorized trespassers. Keeping older locks installed leaves you vulnerable to people who have keys to them. Changing each of your locks and creating new sets of keys ensure that your new home remains a safe and secure place for you and your loved ones.

5. Change Mailing Address

Some of the most important notifications we receive are still sent to us by mail, and it can be bothersome not to receive them as soon as we’ve moved into a new space. Along with friends and family, make sure that you notify the post office of your new address, so they can send your mail to your new home as soon as possible.
