Meet Dave, Commercial Warehouse Manager

Able Moving & Storage

The commercial warehouse functions are integrated into all Able Moving & Storage commercial services, including Project Management, IT Logistics Management, Short- and Long-Term Storage, Furniture, and E-Waste Disposal/Recycling. On top of the day-to-day warehouse functions, the team also preps all commercial trucks for each unique job and then offloads and handles items labeled disposal, storage, or donations when they return. Our Commercial Warehouse Manager, Dave Ross, oversees warehouse tasks, staffing, supplies, equipment, billing, scheduling, sanitation, and safety. He ensures all storage is organized, secure, and kept in the right place. The title of Warehouse Manager is not one that everyone can manage, but despite this mountain of work, Dave handles it all with a smile and a sense of humor.

We sat down with Dave to chat about his experience in the moving industry and about his positive leadership:

  • How long have you been with Able? What were you doing before working at Able?
I have been part of Able for 2 ½ years. Before working at Able, I was with a warehouse flooring company. But I have been in the moving industry for over 30 years.

  • What is your current role, and what position have you held before?
I’ve been the warehouse manager since joining Able Moving & Storage. I have held many positions within the moving industry, including residential moving, State Department, military, commercial, project management, and warehouse.

  • What do you like about working in the moving industry?
When I was a young mover, I really loved the extra income from receiving tips. Now, I enjoy the routine and the ability to have family time in my day. In general, I also like the day-to-day challenges within problem-solving and logistics. It makes each day interesting!

  • What do you like most about working at Able?
I like the laid-back and friendly atmosphere. It can get busy and stressful sometimes, but it’s an overall positive environment, and we tackle issues as a team.

  • What do you like to do when you are not working?
My top priority is spending quality time with my wife, son, and the dogs. I used to coach rec and travel baseball. I also enjoy watching NASCAR, football (Go Bears!), and baseball (Go Mets!).

  • What is the best career advice you live by or try to share with others?
One of my favorite quotes is, “Follow good leadership and, in the absence of good leadership, be the one to provide it.” Another one is, “It’s all ON you, but it’s not all ABOUT you.” It helps me to think of the bigger picture when faced with challenges.

I like a lot of Jocko Willink’s books. I highly recommend them to anyone looking to develop leadership or management skills.

  • Did you have a mentor within the moving industry?
I did! His name was Roger Moss. He really helped show me the ropes of the industry, and my potential for a career, and was an overall great guy. I wish I could share all my stories, but it would take forever!

  • What is your go-to moving tip?
My number one tip is HIRE PROFESSIONALS!
