Meet Melissa, Commercial Customer Service Manager

Able Moving & Storage

Melissa Carrano is the Customer Service Manager of Able Moving & Storage’s commercial department. She oversees customer satisfaction for all commercial services: local office moves, long-distance office moves, systems furniture disassembly and reassembly, IT disconnect and reconnect, inventory and asset management, project management, and warehousing. As a valued member of our company’s leadership team, Melissa leads by connecting with people, identifying their talents and strengths, and helping them recognize those assets through growth opportunities. She is also adept in conflict resolution by finding common ground among different views and articulating the team’s shared goal, enabling her to supervise numerous coordinators and manage the commercial office.

We sat down with Melissa to learn more about her work and function at Able Moving:

  • How long have you been with Able, and what were you doing before you joined the company?
I have been with Able for about seven years. I worked here for a few years, left when I had my sons, and then returned when they were older. Before Able, I worked in corporate catering, aviation catering, and commercial construction doing customer service, coordinating, and billing. I also worked for a different moving company as a receptionist and coordinator.

  • What is your current role? Have you held past positions?
When I was first at Able, I was the customer service supervisor for the residential, government, and commercial divisions. I returned a few years later as a commercial relocation coordinator—the position was supposed to be temporary, but then I was asked to stay full-time as a supervisor. A few months later, we added new coordinators to the team, and I was promoted to a management role and joined the leadership team.

  • What do you like about working in the moving industry?
I like that this industry is constantly changing and that no two days are the same. We never have a boring day here! I also enjoy helping our customers and finding solutions to help with their needs.

  • What do you enjoy most about working at Able?
The people! I love the people I work with daily and think they are the absolute best. The Able team is a kind, collaborative, positive group that genuinely cares about each other like family. We all encourage one another to better themselves and their career.

  • What are some of your hobbies or interests?
I enjoy spending time with my kids, family, and friends. I like to read murder mystery books like Agatha Christie. I love British mystery TV shows too!

  • What is the best career advice you live by or try to give to others?
I try to stress the importance of two things:
    1. Work-life balance is essential, but it requires a strong work ethic and a good understanding of your priorities to achieve a balance.
    2. If you find a career you love and have passion for, it won’t feel like work.
  • Are there any personal mentors or role models you look up to?
Yes! One person that is very dear to me is Laura Ware. She now works for Securis, but she was a mentor to me when I was younger. Laura took me under her wing and taught me the importance of customer service, sales, and networking because 85% of this business is referrals. She gave me guidance on being a professional female in a male-dominated industry. I try to help others in the way she helped me, and I recommend everyone find a strong mentor when getting started in their career.
